A side-hustle can be a part-time job (working at a pub, for the university, or being an A-level tutor), volunteering for an oganisation or even starting your own Business, alongside your studies.
Watching Netflix and going out every night is for sure fun and it’s a good way of making friends. But if you do that every day for the duration of your degree, it won’t take you far.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be a complete side-business, or even make that much money. A side hustle is all about your personal growth, development, and entrepreneurial creativity. Here are 2 ways a side hustle can be a really good idea.
1. Develop your experience and skills
Think long term, when you graduate and look for a job, no one would really want one who spent the last 3 years watching Netflix and getting wasted at every sports night. Companies need people who are accountable and have got very strong skills (whether that is communication, teamwork, sales, marketing and so on).
A side hustle will boost your CV and help you land some great jobs. During my bachelor’s degree, I somehow managed to get a high paid term time (full time) job at university which was meant to be taken up by a much older and mature person. But the reason why my application was so competitive was due to the skills I developed whilst working as a receptionist at my accommodation (in fact I still do it because it’s fun)
The good news is that all of those skills that you will learn from your side hustle are skills that employers look for as well. So, it is time very well spent, although you won’t see the results immediately.
2. Make money
Making a little extra cash on the side can also help alleviate some financial stress – for example, you may want to get the new headphones or a laptop upgrade. The best way to make quick money is by getting a part time job but don’t get sucked up on the idea that starting a business will get you a lot of cash quickly.
Starting a business is a long-term commitment and will require you to spent countless hours on developing and optimizing your business plan and website/app before seeing any revenue been generated. But just remember depending on your business, you can get profitable from day 1 (although this is rare).
So, what are you waiting for?
Having a side hustle is a great way to invest on your personal growth, learn new skills and even make some cash. Whatever you decide to do, remember that the point is your personal satisfaction. If you are not enjoying what you are doing, then you can always change it and find something that suits you.
